What Is IndexNow?

IndexNow is a protocol developed by Bing that allows websites to instantly notify search engines when content is created, updated, or deleted.

Instead of waiting for search engines to eventually crawl your site, IndexNow lets you proactively tell them, “Hey, something changed!”—leading to faster indexing and improved visibility in search results.

When you enable IndexNow in IndexPilot:

  • New and updated pages are submitted instantly

  • No need to wait for crawling

  • We handle all future changes automatically

  • Better coverage and faster SEO results

🛠 Setup Instructions (All Sites)

Step 1: Get Your IndexNow Key

  1. In IndexPilot, go to Integrations → Bing IndexNow

  2. IndexPilot automatically generates a unique key for your site

  3. Click “Copy” to copy the key to your clipboard

Step 2: Create the Key File

  1. Open a text editor (Notepad on Windows, TextEdit on Mac)

  2. Paste your key as plain text

    • Important: Paste only the key—no extra characters, spaces, or lines

  3. Save the file using your key as the filename, with .txt extension

    • Example: If your key is abc123xyz789, save it as abc123xyz789.txt

Step 3: Upload the File to Your Website

  1. Upload the .txt file to the root directory of your website

  2. It must be accessible at:
    https://yourdomain.com/abc123xyz789.txt

✅ The file must be publicly accessible at the top level of your domain—not in a subfolder.

Step 4: Verify in IndexPilot

  1. Back in IndexPilot, click “Verify Key”

  2. If the file is correctly placed, you’ll see a ✅ green checkmark

  3. IndexPilot will now:

    • Submit your URLs automatically

    • Monitor your sitemap

    • Instantly notify Bing (and other IndexNow-supported engines) about any changes

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Double-check that your .txt file contains only the key—no line breaks or extra spaces

  • The file must be hosted at your root domain (e.g. https://yourdomain.com/key.txt)

  • If you're using Webflow, ensure the redirect is published and the media URL is still active

  • Not seeing verification? Use an incognito browser to test the URL of your .txt file
